The 63-year actor led a life of poverty in the first half growing up in the small, dark rooms of Dharavi; earning from odd jobs like selling pens in the streets of Mumbai, working in hotels and side by side mimicking actors.
Johnny Lever is from a Telugu Christian Family. His mother’s name is Karunamma Janumala and father’s name is Prakash Rao Janumala, he used to be an operator in Hindustan Lever Ltd (HUL). Lever has three younger sisters and two younger brothers; one of them is Jimmy Moses (playback singer, comedian and actor).

Career
Johnny Lever worked at HUL for 6 years and had to quit in 1981 to focus on stage performances. He started to perform stand-up-comedy and later joined the Kalyanji-Anandji, music group. He was offered Dard Ka Rishta by Sunil Dutt. His debut Bollywood film was Tum Par Hum Qurbaan (1985), his Telugu debut film was Criminal (1995) directed by Mahesh Bhatt, his debut Tamil film was Anbirkku Alavillai and his debut in television was with Zabaan Sambhalke (1993). His most praised performance was in Baazigar (1993) in the character of Babulal. With Hasi ke Hangame, he became a household name. His own television show was Johny Aala Re (2007, Zee Tv).
He is the president of Mimicry Artist Association Mumbai (MAAM). He has a proud record of acting in 350+ films (mostly hits) which includes Karan Arjun, Raja Hindustani, Deewana Mastana, Dulhe Raja, Main Prem ki Dewaani Hoon, Phir Hera Pheri, Boss, Entertainment, Golmaal Again, Housefull 4, Coolie No. 1, etc.
